SMUD heat pump water heater rebates: amounts and status check

A small tracker for SMUD’s residential heat pump water heater program: published rebate tiers, the application route, and what remains unverified about funding and deadlines.

Last checked October 22, 2026 · Residential SMUD program only. The public pages advertise rebates subject to funding. Remaining funds and an individual project’s approval are not verified. Recheck with SMUD and a participating contractor before committing to a purchase.

Program status and deadlines

The reviewed pages describe first-come application processing through qualified participating contractors, with rebates conditional on available funding. This establishes a published offer, not a reservation of funds.

Eligibility questions before a quote

SMUD’s water-heater page specifies NEEA Tier III or IV equipment for climate zone 12, a thermostatic mixing valve, applicable permits and inspections, and an individually SMUD-metered home. It also addresses individually metered multi-unit dwellings up to four units. The published summary directs contractors to the current program handbook for full requirements. SMUD’s home-rebate catalog also specifies a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of at least 2.87. Confirm the actual model against the current eligible-unit list and contractor requirements; this summary does not verify an individual installation.

A Sacramento-area mailing address alone does not prove SMUD eligibility. Confirm the service account, model eligibility and participating contractor. Homeowners should use SMUD’s official contractor route for an application; ObservedWork does not submit or approve rebates.

Change log and source dates

February 18, 2026: SMUD announced higher residential heat-pump rebates beginning that month, including water heaters up to $4,000 for gas-to-electric conversions and $1,000 for electric-to-electric upgrades. The notice does not establish an unlimited allocation or guarantee availability today.

October 15, 2026: this pilot checked the program tier table and water-heater requirements. No budget balance or fixed closing date was verified. The program pages did not show a publication/revision date, so October 15 is our check date, not their effective date.

October 22, 2026: reviewed the tier table, water-heater requirements, home-rebate catalog, application explanation and 2026 news archive. Published amounts and the previously listed installation requirements remain the same. Added the catalog’s UEF 2.87 minimum to this guide; its effective date was not established. No newer water-heater funding or closing-date notice was identified in the reviewed archive. Remaining funds, reservations and a fixed program closing date remain unverified. This is a review date, not a new program effective date.

A contractor or distributor handoff

Use the worksheet to keep the quote separate from funding confirmation. Record the household’s program eligibility, proposed model and size, existing fuel, participating contractor, permit requirements, verified rebate tier, confirmation date and any submission deadline.

For distributors, the useful next step is checking product eligibility and the installer relationship. Advertised rebates are not orders or proof of local permit activity. For territory research, request the geography and work category you need; keep homeowner rebate applications with SMUD.

How this tracker stays honest

Next source check due October 29, 2026. While this page presents an active program listing, check the official program pages and notices at least weekly. Recheck sooner after a funding pause, closure, new allocation, changed amount or eligibility notice. A successful page load alone does not verify funds.

If a check is missed or a source fails, the page retains the dated figures with a review-due notice and no claim of confirmed funding. Do not advance the last-checked date until the source content is reviewed. No automatic availability monitoring or rebate notification service is provided.
